Board Member Kara M. Stein to Host Forum for Auditors of Small Businesses and Auditors of Broker-Dealers in Denver

Aimed at providing information and resources to small firms, the September 12th event is the third in a series of forums Board Members are hosting across the country in 2024

Washington, DC, Aug. 7, 2024

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) announced today that it will hold the third of its in-person 2024 forums on auditing in the small business environment and on auditing broker-dealers in Denver on September 12, 2024. The one-day, in-person event will be hosted by Board Member Kara M. Stein at the Grand Hyatt in Denver, Colorado.

The forums are intentionally tailored to address the PCAOB-registered firms auditing smaller public companies or auditing broker-dealers. The forums are designed to provide a unique opportunity for audit firms to engage with representatives from the PCAOB, as well as other regulators, in an interactive setting.

“The PCAOB is dedicated to engaging with all stakeholders. Auditors of smaller businesses and auditors of broker-dealers are an essential part of the auditing landscape and our investor protection framework,” said Board Member Stein. “It is important to me that we hear auditors’ perspectives, and I look forward to the dialogue in Denver.”

Throughout 2024, each PCAOB Board Member is hosting an in-person forum in a different city across the country. Chair Erica Y. Williams launched the series with the first forum in Chicago on May 22, 2024. Board Member George R. Botic hosted the June 5 forum in Los Angeles, California. Board Member Christina Ho will host a forum in Miami, Florida. Board Member Anthony C. Thompson will host the final forum in Jersey City. The PCAOB will announce the exact dates and locations for the remaining forums in the near future. Recordings of all five forums will be made available on the PCAOB’s website.

In addition to remarks from Board Member Stein, the agenda includes the following:

  • Presentations by PCAOB staff from the Office of the Chief Auditor, the Division of Registration and Inspections, and the Division of Enforcement and Investigations;
  • Presentation of illustrative examples related to audit risks associated with revenue, the auditor’s responsibility to identify and communicate critical audit matters to investors, and heightened risk of fraud, the importance of journal entry testing; and
  • Presentations by staff of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
